We slept late, which was necessary as NYC is six hours ahead of Hawai‘i and yet we’d been going to bed at 2am and waking up around 6am since we arrived. That pattern continued. Then we chilled around the apartment (window unit on) and napped. We met Husband’s family (Mom, Stepdad, Uncle #1, Uncle #2 and VPAunt, Aunt and Aunt’s Daughter, Stepdaughter, and Daughter’s Friends, and Cousin) at their hotel in Times Square. They rented a limo and arrived in style. We had drinks and a snack. I ordered a ten dollar rum and coke—it had special rum and special coke. The special rum was nice, but the special coke was bitter.

Then it was off to the opening. It was a complete success. There was a good turnout and everyone said very nice things about the work. Lots of people were asking the artists questions. Husband sold a piece. Yes, that’s right. Husband sold art to a stranger at a NYC opening. While all of the opening hoopla was going on, I became distracted by the most amazing bathroom spectacle—a polished brass tampon dispenser in each stall in the ladies’ room. So lavish, and yet the most practical placement I have ever seen.

Afterwards, we had dinner with an art critic who used to be a literature person. Then went back to the hotel in Times Square for a drink with the family. This time I had a special rum and regular coke. Uncle #1 had an extra bed in his room, so we slept there. It was like sleeping at home (we own the world’s most comfy bed), but with air conditioning.
