Wishful Thinking

I'm grading papers. One student plagiarized her/his entire essay. It totally threw off my grading groove. So what did I do? I changed my avatar to resemble a woman who would not have this problem.

The papers aren't bad exactly...They are, however, unfinished. I am drinking coconut rum and diet coke. There is more rum than coke. The goal is not to get drunk, but to reduce the amount I care about these papers, so that I do not take it personally that my students turned in a giant stack of unfinished papers, and instead grade and comment as a reasonable human being. This, of course, suggests that I have been taking it personally and getting angry. I do not want the hate to pour onto the page. I'll save that for the classroom.
